SPREADSHEET WORKSPACE

Answers Before You Combine Your Files

Which spreadsheet file formats can I use?

Supported spreadsheet file formats are XLSX, XLS, XLSM, ODS, and UTF-8 CSV. File type is detected from the contents, not just the extension. Password-protected and encrypted files are rejected.

Merge and split outputs are XLSX or CSV. Worksheet PDF export creates PDFs, and split or PDF batches are delivered as ZIP downloads.

What are the free and pass limits?

Free batches accept 50 MB of total input across up to 30 files. A pass raises that to 100 MB and 300 files. Merge and split guards are 1,000,000 non-empty cells free and 2,000,000 with a pass.

Splitting and PDF have additional output limits, and merge and split have lower device limits on phones. These are browser-tool guards, not guarantees that every device can process every batch below them. See pricing and limits.

Are my files uploaded?

No. File contents, file names, worksheet names, column names, and cell values stay in your browser. Processing runs locally in a Web Worker.

Accounts, payments, and hosting make separate network requests. Cloudflare has standard request logs, and Google Analytics 4 measures anonymous page visits and tool usage on combinesheets.com without file contents, file names, sheet names, column names or cell values. Read the privacy notice.

Is this Excel sheet merger free to use?

Yes. Free use needs no account and allows up to 30 files per batch, 50 MB of total input, and a merge guard of 1,000,000 non-empty cells. Select the worksheets you need and check their columns in the worksheet merging guide. Outputs contain values only.

Can I use it as an Excel sheet splitter for one workbook?

Yes. Free runs accept one workbook and up to 10 output files, packaged in a ZIP. Choose one file per worksheet or split a single sheet by row count. The 50 MB input limit and 1,000,000 non-empty-cell guard apply, with lower limits on phones. See the worksheet splitting guide.

Will formulas keep calculating after export?

No. Formula expressions become their last saved, cached values. Recalculate and save in your spreadsheet app before processing if the source has changed.

If a formula has no saved value, export stops and asks you to recalculate and save. The tool does not replace a missing formula cache with an empty cell.

Is workbook formatting preserved?

Excel date number formats are kept, but other workbook formatting is not. Fonts, fills, borders, column widths, merged-cell layout, conditional formatting, and data validation are not preserved. Comments, images, charts, pivot objects, macros, and external links are also lost. Keep your originals for the full workbook.

How does duplicate removal work?

It compares whole business rows after column alignment, ignores the added source column, and keeps the first copy. It reports how many duplicates were removed. Matching an Order ID alone does not make two rows duplicates when other values differ.

How are columns matched?

The first non-empty row is the header. Matching ignores capitalization and surrounding spaces. The first table sets column order; later new columns go at the end, and missing values stay empty.

Blank or duplicate header names stop the merge. Different names such as Revenue and Sales remain separate. See the worksheet matching guide.

Do leading zeros in IDs survive?

Leading zeros in text IDs, such as 000101, are kept. Empty cells also remain distinct from zero.

When importing CSV into another app, set ID columns to text. A receiving spreadsheet app can reinterpret an identifier as a number if you let it infer the type.

What encoding does CSV use?

Use UTF-8 CSV input. CSV export offers an optional UTF-8 BOM, which helps some spreadsheet apps identify the encoding. Check the downloaded file in the app that will use it. The CSV guide covers mixed CSV and workbook inputs.

Can I split sheets or divide a long table?

Yes. Export each selected sheet to its own XLSX or CSV, or split one sheet or CSV by data-row count with a repeated header. All outputs come in one ZIP.

Free runs support one workbook and 10 outputs; a pass supports several workbooks and 300 outputs. See worksheet splitting.

Does PDF export match the original print view?

No. It rebuilds values as tables, with repeated headers and page numbers. Original print areas, page breaks, headers, footers, styling, charts, and images are not reproduced. PDF text must use Western European Latin-1 characters; other scripts and emoji stop export.

Free batches allow 3 worksheets; passes allow 100. Both have guards of 20,000 non-empty cells per sheet and 100,000 per batch. Review PDF layout options.

What does a pass add, and what stays the same?

A pass only raises usage limits: batches up to 100 MB and 300 files, a merge and split guard of 2,000,000 non-empty cells, split runs with several workbooks and up to 300 outputs, and PDF batches of up to 100 worksheets. Nothing else changes.

A pass does not preserve formulas or formatting. Output is values only, exactly as on the free tier, and PDF layout, phone limits for merge and split, and device memory stay the same. See pricing and limits.

Do passes renew automatically?

No. The 30-day pass costs $4.90, and the 365-day pass costs $14.90, in USD. Payments are one-time through PayPal. Time starts on successful payment; another purchase adds days after an active pass ends. There is nothing to cancel.

When can I request a refund?

Request a refund within 7 days of purchase if a supported file fails to export. Email support@combinesheets.com with your order reference and the error message; you do not need to send the confidential file. A full refund ends the pass. Read Refunds.

Why does a pass need an account?

Sign in with your Google account to link pass access to your account and view orders. Free tools need no account, and account information stays separate from spreadsheet contents processed locally.

Can I use the tools on a phone?

On phones, merge and split allow 20 MB of input and 300,000 non-empty cells per batch for every tier. PDF input limits are 50 MB and 30 files free, or 100 MB and 300 files with a pass, on phones too. PDF-specific cell guards still apply. Smaller batches may be more practical, and browser memory may run out before a listed limit. A pass does not raise the phone limits for merge and split.

Is this an official Microsoft product for Excel files?

No. Excel is a trademark of Microsoft Corporation. CombineSheets is an independent service and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Microsoft. References to Excel files and sheets describe compatibility.

Where can I find sample files?

Use sales-january.xlsx and sales-february.csv to test different column orders, a new Sales Rep field, and one duplicate. Use regions-q1.xlsx to test North, South, and West worksheets while leaving the hidden Notes sheet unselected. These are synthetic examples.
